Fall in Rhode Island hits different. One week you're still sweating through a Saturday morning rush, and the next the air shifts — that first cool morning where you actually want a hot coffee instead of an iced one. We feel it at the counter every year, and honestly, it's one of our favorite times to be in Johnston.

September and October around here are packed. Between the festivals, the farmers markets winding down for the season, and the community events that make this state feel genuinely small in the best way, there's a lot to get out for. Here's what we're paying attention to this fall — and a few things worth putting on your calendar if you haven't already.

The Johnston Apple Festival: Right in Our Backyard

We'd be remiss not to start here. The 38th Annual Apple Festival and Artisan Market is happening September 19–20, 2026, at Johnston Memorial Park — and if you've never been, it's one of those events that reminds you why living in a town like Johnston is actually pretty great.

Local food vendors, a craft fair, live music, and yes, a lot of apples. It's the kind of event where you run into half the people you know and end up staying two hours longer than you planned. We'll be fueling up before we head over — a multigrain breakfast sandwich and a hot coffee from our counter on Hartford Ave is the right move before a morning of walking around a festival.

If you're coming from Cranston or North Providence, it's worth the short drive. Johnston Memorial Park is easy to get to, and the event draws a real mix of local vendors and artisans.

WaterFire Providence: Still the Best Thing We Do as a State

If you haven't been to WaterFire yet this year, September gives you two more chances. There's a Full Lighting on Saturday, September 26 — dedicated to celebrating Rhode Island educators — starting at sunset around 6:35 PM and running until midnight. Before that, there's a Starts at Sunset event on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge on September 17, running from 6:51 PM to 9:00 PM.

Nearly 100 bonfires lit across the Providence River, music, and the kind of crowd energy that's hard to find anywhere else in New England. We always tell people: if you've never been, go. If you've been before, go again. It doesn't get old.

Pro tip from us: eat before you go. Downtown Providence parking and crowds mean you'll want to arrive ready. Stop by our menu and grab something substantial — our grain bowls and wraps travel well if you're heading straight from Johnston.

PVDFest: Downtown Providence Gets Loud

PVDFest is back September 18–19, 2026, in downtown Providence. This is one of the city's biggest free arts and culture festivals — live performances, local food vendors, street art, and the kind of creative energy that makes Providence worth the 15-minute drive from Johnston.

It overlaps with the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival (September 18–20 at Marble House in Newport) if you're looking to make a full weekend of it. The Newport event is a different vibe — more formal, ticketed, focused on wine and food pairings — but both are worth knowing about depending on what you're into.

Federal Hill Columbus Day Festival: Four Days of Real Food

Mark your calendar for October 9–12, 2026. The Federal Hill Columbus Day Festival is one of the most genuinely fun food events in Rhode Island, full stop. Over 80 food, art, and retail vendors set up along Atwells Avenue, and the neighborhood — already one of the best dining streets in Providence — goes full celebration mode.

If you've never walked Federal Hill during this festival, you're missing out. The Italian-American food culture on that street is real and deep, and the Columbus Day weekend event brings it all to the surface. It's the kind of thing that makes you proud to live in Rhode Island.

Harvest Fests Worth the Drive

Autumnfest in Woonsocket (October 9–12, 2026) at World War II Veterans Memorial State Park is a classic Rhode Island fall event — community-focused, family-friendly, and the kind of thing that's been happening long enough to feel like a real tradition.

Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival in Newport (October 17–18, 2026) is exactly what it sounds like: local seafood, live music, and the Newport waterfront in peak fall form. If you're a seafood person, this one's worth the drive down.

And if you're looking for something closer to home, Food Truck Friday at Roger Williams Park runs through September 25 — a solid option for a weeknight out without going far.

What We're Making This Fall

Fall means our kitchen starts shifting. We're leaning into warmer builds — heartier grain bowls, more roasted vegetable options, and the kind of breakfast sandwiches that actually hold you through a cold morning. Our multigrain bread and Portuguese bolo-style muffins are baked in-house daily, and fall is when those really shine.
