The Rhode Island Craft Beverage Guide: Local Drinks Worth Seeking Out in Johnston, Providence, and Beyond

There's something happening in Rhode Island's drink scene that doesn't get nearly enough attention. While everyone talks about the food, the craft beverage makers — the kombucha brewers, the cold-press juice operations, the century-old soda companies — are quietly doing some of the most interesting work in New England.

We've been paying attention to this for a while now. At Wicked Fresh Cafe on Hartford Ave in Johnston, we've built our drink menu around local producers we actually believe in. That means we've spent real time with these products — tasting, testing, talking to the people behind them. This guide is what we've learned.

Why Local Beverages Matter (and Why We Care)

When we opened our doors at 1345 Hartford Ave, Johnston, RI 02919, one of our first decisions was what to pour. It would have been easy to stock the usual national brands. But that felt wrong for a cafe that sources its food locally and bakes its multigrain bread and Portuguese bolo-style muffins in-house every morning.

So we went looking for Rhode Island and New England producers who shared our values. What we found surprised us — the depth of craft happening right here in our backyard. Here's our honest guide to the local beverages worth seeking out, including a few you can find right here at the cafe.

Katalyst Kombucha — On Draft in Johnston

Katalyst Kombucha comes out of Greenfield, Massachusetts, just over the state line, and it's been one of our most popular offerings since we put it on draft. We pour it fresh, the way it's meant to be served, and our regulars have strong opinions about their favorite flavors.

What makes Katalyst stand out is the fermentation process — they use a traditional continuous brew method that produces a genuinely complex, lightly effervescent kombucha. It's not the overly sweet, barely-fermented stuff you find in grocery store coolers. This is the real thing: tangy, alive, with actual probiotic culture.

We rotate flavors seasonally, and right now we're pouring their ginger lemon, which pairs surprisingly well with our grain bowls and wraps. If you've been curious about kombucha but haven't found one you like, come in and try it on draft — it's a different experience than anything in a bottle.

Yacht Club Soda — Providence, Since 1915

This one is a Rhode Island institution, and we're proud to pour it. Yacht Club Soda has been brewed in Providence since 1915, making it one of the oldest continuously operating soda companies in New England. That's not a marketing claim — it's just true.

What we love about Yacht Club is that it tastes like soda used to taste: real cane sugar, clean carbonation, flavors that actually resemble the fruit they're named after. Their Del's Lemonade collaboration is a Rhode Island summer staple, but honestly, the ginger ale is what we reach for when we want something to pair with a sandwich.

You can find Yacht Club at a handful of local spots, and we carry it here at the cafe. It's the kind of thing that makes out-of-state visitors do a double-take — "wait, this is local?" Yes. And it's been local longer than most of us have been alive.

nobl Cold Pressed Juices — Rhode Island Made

nobl is a Rhode Island cold-pressed juice operation that we've been fans of for a while. Cold-pressed juice is one of those things that sounds like a trend but is actually just a better way to make juice — the hydraulic press extracts more nutrients and doesn't generate the heat that destroys enzymes in conventional juicing.

nobl's lineup covers the basics (green juice, citrus blends) but also gets into some more interesting territory with their seasonal offerings. We carry a rotating selection at the cafe, and they move fast — especially the green blends, which our regulars grab as a morning add-on to their breakfast order.

If you're in Johnston or heading into Providence, nobl is worth seeking out. It's the kind of product that makes you realize how much better fresh, local juice is compared to the pasteurized stuff that's been sitting in a bottle for weeks.

What We Pour at Wicked Fresh — and Why

At Wicked Fresh Cafe (open Monday through Friday, 7am to 6pm, and Saturday 9am to 5pm — we're closed Sundays), our drink menu is built around these local producers plus a few other carefully chosen options. We don't carry national soda brands. We don't pour juice from concentrate. That's a deliberate choice.

Our Johnson & Wales-trained culinary team applies the same sourcing philosophy to beverages that we apply to food: if we can find a local or regional producer doing it better, we go with them. It means our menu changes with the seasons and with what's available, but it also means everything we pour has a story behind it.

You can see our full drink menu at wickedfreshri.com/menu — we update it regularly as we rotate in new offerings.

Other Local Beverage Makers Worth Knowing

Beyond what we pour at the cafe, there are a few other Rhode Island and New England beverage makers worth knowing about:

Dave's Coffee (South Main Street, Providence) has been making house-crafted coffee syrups and coffee milk — Rhode Island's official state drink — for years. Their coffee milk syrup is the real deal, and they ship nationally now, but it's worth picking up in person if you're in Providence.

The Coffee Exchange (207 Wickenden St, Providence) has been roasting their own beans since 1984. If you're a coffee person, this is a pilgrimage worth making. They source directly from farms and roast in small batches — the kind of operation that takes coffee seriously without being pretentious about it.

Brewed Awakenings has multiple locations in Johnston and Cranston, including a drive-thru on Cherry Hill Road that's been a Johnston staple since 1996. They're a local chain that's managed to stay genuinely local — worth supporting.

How to Find Local Craft Beverages in Rhode Island

The honest answer is: ask. Local cafes, farm stands, and specialty food shops are usually the best source. The Hope Street Farmers Market in Providence is a good place to discover new producers. And if you're in Johnston, stop by Wicked Fresh at 1345 Hartford Ave — we're happy to talk about what we're pouring and why.

You can also order online at wickedfreshri.com and pick up in-store. We're at 401-273-7374 if you want to call ahead and ask what's on draft.

Rhode Island's craft beverage scene is worth exploring. It's small enough that you can actually get to know the producers, and good enough that you'll want to.
